**eta- as the post says, let's do this now. just read an article saying "Lawmakers expect a full House vote on the death gratuity issue by the end of the week." not soon enough and they say it's still not clear if it will be legally possible.". but it's not clear if it will happen and exactly when. NOT SOON ENOUGH.
make a call, send an email. link at the end of the post.**
I am making this post not with the thoughts that I (an insignificant mommy blogger) can change the world...but because if I don't get it out I. WILL. SCREAM.
If you are the type that is offended by a cuss word or two, then you don't want to read today's post. It won't be sunshine, scrapbooking, or glitter.
I am typing this post for therapy. And also to share with you. Because some of you might not know what is going on. Some of you might want to help. All of you have big hearts. And that's why I am here today.
Today I don't want to get into logistics. I don't want to talk about President Obama. Or the tea party. I don't want to talk about John Boehner or Ted Cruz.
Today I want to talk in broad terms. Today I am talking to the United States government. As I type this I have tears streaming down my face. Tears that have been there since yesterday when I read the news.
UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT, THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.
It is unacceptable that the families of our fallen soldiers are being denied benefits because you can't get your shit together.
SEVENTEEN FAMILIES HAVE NOT RECIEVED THESE BENEFITS SINCE OCTOBER 1.
Do you know where this photo was taken? That's Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
The words "Dover Air Force Base" cause every military wife's heart to sink. Do you know why? If your husband is killed during a deployment, they send his body/remains to Dover. And that is where you wait anxiously to greet him and take him home.
A few years ago a friend lost her husband. As she waited and cried and prayed...all could talk about was meeting him at Dover. Waiting for the moment she could see him again, hold his hand. Kiss what was left of him.
Because of the shutdown gold star families are not receiving the money that is normally wired within 36 hours of their loved one's death.
This money is for flying to dover.
This money is for funeral costs.
THIS MONEY IS SO THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MONEY.
And that has been taken from them. Because of selfishness and BS in DC. It's gone.
Can you imagine it? Can you imagine having someone pull up to your door and knock? Can you imagine opening the door with a big smile on your face and then having the wind knocked out of you when you realize what is going on? Can you imagine the despair? The anguish?
Now imagine this. You don't have the money to give your husband the proper funeral and burial he deserves. You don't have the money to fly to Dover to see your son come off that plane.
Can you imagine it?
Well, that is exactly what is happening right now. Several young men and women were killed in Afghanistan this weekend (2 from our former Ranger Family) and they are living their NIGHTMARE right now.
Are you okay with this happening? If so, close this window and click away.
If you aren't okay with it...if you are infuriated and heartbroken like I am right now, then please help.
I'm about to share a way you can help. Some kind and generous souls have already stepped up to help the families that are grieving right now. Some wonderful foundations have decided to help cover the costs for now.
But let's be honest. Men and women are still deployed. Deaths are still happening. This is an ongoing problem. While the grandstanding and playtime continues in DC...our men and women continue to fight.
AND THEY DON'T DESERVE THIS. Regardless of your thoughts on war or your political affiliation...surely you can see that they don't deserve this.
This is a reputable organization that I have delt with before. Yes, it is a "Ranger" specific organization, but right now they are raising funds to help the families of our fallen servicemembers. Period.
PLEASE PLEASE donate. Please. I don't ask for money here. I don't ask for much. But please donate something today.Yes. I'm begging.
Even if it's ten dollars. This would mean the world to me. If I was ever in that position...God forbid...I would want to be taken care of. Jimmy would want me to be taken care of.
Donate to Servicemember Emergencies. Thanks to an overwhelming response the donations have stopped here. Good job guys.
Donate to Lead the Way Fund.
The above links are some of the dependable organizations that have decided to step in and take care of these families.
And if you'd like to talk to your Congressman/woman (or write him/her a scathing email like I've done)...CLICK HERE.
As I sat on the bed bawling last night, talking to Jimmy as he could barely contain his anger- I thought I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. No nodding and saying "what a shame" no looking at the donation link and thinking "how nice!". It's time for action.
Will you help me spread the word and help the cause?
Love to you all. Praying this stops soon.
